Really, it is a gourmet Blondie Bar mix.Oct 25, 2010

I can't believe I spent $10 for a single box of this mix in the grocery store, but the reason I did is because I'd never seen this brand before. It was pretty easy to make - actually, Blondies in general are pretty easy to make - and the ingredients used in this mix are superior quality. After adding a stick of butter and an egg, it turned out a pan of pure heaven that completely surprised me by being worth the expense. The box indicates 9 servings. You may want to make it 12 as these bars are super rich and can be a bit overpowering in a big serving. There is a TON of chocolate in these - my husband was in heaven. These would be awesome to have on hand in case you need a last minute treat to offer unexpected guests or need an impressive "home made" gift on short notice.
If you have access to fresh high quality ingredients, making your own from scratch might be as good. Certainly making your own from scratch would cost far less. But making your own from scratch - of this quality - would necessitate that you purchase a high quality chocolate and other ingredients that may not be an every day part of your pantry.

Chunky and chewy- great texture! This is surely not your everyday brownie mix. The Contessa did not disappoint! Ina Garten, this is one household that will always love you!

Barefoot Contessa mixes are great. Hard to believe the finished product is out of a box. great time saver, easy instructions, very few ingredients. Most call for eggs and butter.

We are living in a developing country and being able to make these yummy bars has been such a treat, in every sense of the word! They are easy to make and I found them to be tender and flavorful! Love the giant chunks of chocolate! It's a splurge, to be sure, but especially given my lack of access to baked treats, it is a splurge I very much appreciate!

I was curious as to why the mix cost so much. I figured they had to be amazing. Boy was I disappointed. The chocolate was a high quality but the mix was gritty and tasteless. Aside from measuring out the the dried ingredients for home made blonde brownies, the hands on time and process was exactly the same. Each box makes only 9 servings as per their information which comes out to about $1.25 each without the additional ingredients you need to add. Even Starbucks sells them for $1.95 and they are MUCH tastier.
