5Undistinguishable from real browniesJun 17, 2006
By Webturtle "webturtle"
The first time I had these, I was at a party and a plate of brownies passed by me -- and I said "no thanks, I can't eat wheat." The lady said "but these are gluten free" and I said "Yeah right." They looked like real brownies, and smelled (oh man, did they smell) like real brownies. She came back with the woman who made them who assured me they were. So I tentatively took one and entered into a state of nirvana that only a brownie after three years of abstinence can provide. WOW.

I've since used this mix as my contribution to the goodie table at a half dozen parties and pot locks, and they are devoured quickly... no one knows they are gluten free.

Not only are they that good, they are also easy to make (add an egg, some water, beat, bake) and easy to freeze (a package makes, I think, 16 brownies). I'm sure they carry all the caloric implications of real brownies but it sure is nice not to feel deprived from treats!

5Wheat-free? Delectable treat for the entire familyNov 16, 2006
By Joanna Daneman
These brownies are not a "almost-as-good-as" substitute to be gnawed on while your family enjoys a wheat-based confection you cannot indulge in. These brownies are fudgey, clean-tasting, thick, and just sweet enough. There is REAL cocoa in here, not artificial something.

In all, as good if not better than any brownie mix. In fact, I say better than any mix and something you can enjoy if you are wheat-allergic and even if you are not. Easy to make and absolutely scrumptious.

5Heavenly!Jul 08, 2006
By A. bauman "Mother, Wife, Artist"
Oh, these are so good! They are thick & squishy like a real brownie. They don't dry out like a lot of GF foods do. My whole family LOVES these & asks for them all the time. VERY good for bringing along to parties where they only serve "regular" foods. If these are for the kids, they will NOT feel deprived.

We used almond milk instead of water, and it fluffed up more like a cake... SOOO good.

EXCELLENT> If I could give them 10 stars, I would.

1Tastes great, not completely gluten free.Dec 31, 2008

I have a gluten reaction to these. Having looked on the celiac boards, I can tell you I'm not alone. In defense of Bob's Red Mill, I think that there are people with celiac disease that react to less than 20 ppm, so something could be gluten-free by the proposed FDA rule, and still make some canary-in-the-coal-mine-types sick.

In fact, I would like to make it clear that I think Bob's Red Mill is a good company, and they are telling the truth--on the days they test their GF mixes, they come out at 20 ppm or less. However, that is still enough to make a lot of celiacs sick.

So, if your celiac child or children are still sick, you should suspect this as a source of illness. Lots of supposedly gluten-free stuff is not, in fact, completely gluten-free, and parents just assume kids are cheating.

However, I wouldn't write off Bob's Red Mill yet--many gluten free companies have to outsource their cocoa powder, which may not be gluten free, if the supplier isn't completely honest. Bob's Red Mill could be following gluten free protocols, while their cocoa supplier might not be.

I do tend to think it's the cocoa manufacturer at fault: lots of people have no reaction at all to other products from Bob's Red Mill.

1NOT GF!Jul 06, 2010

Not only did this product test 'positive' using an Elisa EZ Gluten Test Strip---but my entire family got sick eating them!!! They DO contain a trace amount of gluten---which is detrimental to the health of someone suffering from Celiac Disease.
