1Avoid this product!!Jul 10, 2006

The positive reviewers for this product are shills for Cavalry. Check all their reviews and see they just post good reviews for all Cavalry products. The Cavalry products are cheaply made, loud, and unreliable.

5So far pretty nice...Apr 30, 2011

I was reluctant to buy this Cavalry after reading some of the reviews but decided to give it shot after one person reminded us all these external hard drives may have different brand names but the inner workings can only be one of a few manufacturers, not dissimilar to VCR's back in the day. So, that plus the included eSATA kit was a selling point for me.

I installed the eSATA port in my computer which was very simple to do but I would suggest those not in the know about their systems ascertain you have an appropriate slot on your computer motherboard to plug the eSATA cable into. The manual for your motherboard should show the locations so that, along with looking at the board, you should be able to find the slot if present.
After making all the connections and rebooting my PC the Cavalry hard drive was recognized. If it's not you may have to go into your BIOS to enable it but I didn't seem to have that issue. (I should note I am using Windows XP)

After everything was set up properly I noted that, although this was a 250GB hard drive, it only registered as 232GB's of available storage space. This is not unusual in hard drives, that they are less than what they are said to be, but still it was a little less than I had expected. That said, this is still more than enough for my needs. But if some of you are at the limit of your needs at 250GB I would go with the 500GB model.

Performance-wise I found the data transfer speeds to be pretty good compared to using a USB port, especially when only transferring text files. Pictures and videos also seemed to be faster as well.

Overall, I give the Cavalry a 4-star rating because I still don't know how it will hold up in the long run. More importantly, the loss of 18GB's of space was disappointing. Finally, one last issue as pointed out by a different reviewer, is the fact that if you turn the drive off via the power switch on the back, you must reboot you computer for it to be recognized again. This could be somewhat bothersome if you only want the drive on when you want to backup files.
For now, however, I give Cavalry two thumbs-up on the CAXM 250GB external hard drive.

1Cavalry eSATA/USB is a gamblers folly.Oct 28, 2006

I'm a old quy running 5 computers.

I purchased this drive for critical backups and it looks good. The drive is, however unoperable.

DONT TAKE A CHANCE WITH CAVALRY Drives!

The fan and HD spins up on this one but the USB and eSATA circuit board came dead on delivery. The drive would not recongize two different XP Pro computers useing either USB or SATA ports so I stopped messing with it further.

Just so you know... I did some post purchase research for feedback at NewEgg, TigreDirect, and a couple more places and found the feedback abysmal!

These drives have caused people a lot of damage, lost time and lost data. LOOK UP THE FEEDBACK! This company doesnt make quality, they make mistakes.

I called the Distributor 1-800-xxx-xxxx number in the manual and found all 23 people, Sales, Service, and Tec lines were ''Unavailable''. Yeah right!! I shipped my dead drive back, and cancled a same Cavalry-drive exchange order. Burned once........is enough! Buyer Beware!

This item would intermittently turn off and on. My guess is that it would also overheat. This was the lowest priced 300 GB external drive I could find and I think I know why. I am going to spend the extra money and buy a Seagate next time.

There may have some negative review for this product, but I believe that was just few bad cases. I think that this hard drive was very easy to configure, and it has been very reliable. I can always rely on it to safely store all the preciouse data. It satisfied my needs perfectly and worked great with my computer and transfers music and picture files real quick.
