5Good sound, excellent valueJul 28, 2011
By AmaAddict
The short: These are quality speakers that produce great sound for a <$100 pair of speakers. The volume is sufficient for any normal sized room at regular listening levels.

Here's what I noticed:
-The speakers are well-built and solid feeling. The cables are permanently attached, but the cabling is thick and likely to last a good long time. The cables are long and you can get some good separation between the speakers. The speakers are just over 9" tall and the subwoofer is just over 11". The subwoofer is larger than I expected.
-The sound quality is excellent for an <$100 speaker set. It doesn't quite match the quality of my Creative 5.1 speakers (~$200) and it doesn't match my Sony sound system ($400, 350W), but of course a system that costs ten times more will sound better!
-The bass response is very good just from the two speakers. I leave it with the dial set to about 10% bass and it's more than enough. At 100%, it really starts "thumping".
-I had a fifties-themed outdoor dinner party with a dozen guests and I used these speakers to play some oldies. I plugged in my mp3 player and set the volume to about 50% and it worked well. (I mention this to give you an idea of the loudness).
-The "peak" wattage is advertised as 68 watts. The "rms" wattage is advertised as 32 watts. Where the power cable attaches to the unit, it claims only 30 watts. Using my electrical meter with full volume and full bass I only managed to get a draw of 15 watts. What's the real wattage? I have no idea. For comparison with other products, I would use either the 30 or 32 watt values.
-Even at full volume and full bass, the distortion, while present, was minimal.
-There is a port on the right speaker to attach a headset, in case your computer doesn't have a front audio jack (or it's inaccessible).
-The subwoofer has a label on it stating that it isn't magnetically shielded. It then claims that you shouldn't put a monitor, disk, or CD near it. LCD monitors aren't affected by magnets. Nobody uses floppy disks. And CDs use ink, not magnetism, to store their data. It's a really dumb warning label. However, the hard drive in your computer does store data magnetically and although it would take a huge magnet to cause damage, I would leave at least a few inches between the computer and the subwoofer just to be on the safe side.

5For the price these can't be beatSep 11, 2010

I bought this setup December, 2009, for one of my daughters to use with her TV and iPod. Both of us are more then satisfied with them.

Her living room is about 10x12 and when watching movies the sound is actually quite good. You don't really feel the bass punch you in the chest for things like explosions and car crashes, but no one can realistically expect anything like that to come from a sub-$50 set of speakers. Her music from the iPod sounds clear and powerful, surprisingly so when you realize how small the satellites and subwoofer really are. The sound lacks a bit of lower midrange, but certainly nothing too discernible.

All-in-all the CA-3550 speakers just can't be beat, not at this price. Highly recommended.

2Cheap sound at a cheap priceSep 15, 2011

If you are looking for an inexpensive computer sound system with THUNDERING BASS, but terrible audio quality than this is for you! I purchased a Cyber Acoustics speaker system a few years ago from K-mart and was pleasantly surprised by the audio quality. Being in the market again, I remembered how pleased I was and decided to try them again. I typically use my computer speakers for listening to music.

If you care about audio quality, this system is a big mistake. The bass is WAY to heavy, and the little speakers ridiculously shrill, resulting in an awful sound of overwhelming bass mixed with a cacophony of nail on chalk board sounds. The mid range is almost completely absent. Imagine Alicia Keys, with the thumping bass and shrill highs on the piano with her voice muffled.

5Oh, so worth it...Jun 30, 2011

I was a little skeptical over the numerous reviews, swooning over these speakers.

But, for the price, pretty amazed! It's rated at about 30+ watts RMS (ignore the peak rating which is next to worthless) which doesn't sound like much, but it packs a respectable punch.

It's no THX-certified set or movie theater experience, to be sure, but it packs a respectable amount of bass for its price package and is comparable to many speakers that I've heard that are nearly double the price.

If you're looking for no frills but fairly decent sound for your computer system on a budget, look no further. THIS IS IT!

5Boom! Cradlerock Style!Dec 18, 2009

Not much to say here. With a 68 Watt (max) amp, 8" subwoofer, and nice big cabinet, this little 2.1 system is worth more than $40! Lots of bass! Maybe a little boomy, but for the price, it's a steal! Get one!
