Squares remind me of San Francisco days at Ghirardelli SquareApr 05, 2009
By J. Offenbach My two favorite flavors of Ghirardelli chocolate squares are these Dark Chocolate with Caramel and the Dark Chocolate with Raspberry, but these are the best in my opinion. I find the chocolate to be very firm and the caramel to be very creamy, less sweet than others I've had. They are as pleasant as many creme caramels I have had, the burnt sugar flavor coming through. Some of the squares actually were broken with the filling oozing out, but I rather enjoyed these as long as they didn't stick to the wrappers. I'm not fond of licking the candy off the wrapper and discard those. For this reason, I cannot give these a 5 star review. I find that the wrappers are very easy to remove by simply tearing down the center seam and the confection can easily be popped into the mouth or nibbled while holding onto the chocolate inside the half wrapper. These are especially good with a cup of strong coffee. I have found that young children who like milk chocolate and/or candy bars were not fond of these. They didn't mind the raspberry filled dark chocolate, but these were more of an "adult" taste that they didn't favor.

Poor chocolate, great filling!Feb 14, 2009
By J. Brooks I love dark chocolates, the darker the better. However unlike the many other Ghirardelli dark chocolates this one isn't good.
The chocolate itself doesn't melt smooth, has bad mouth feel, and is absolutely flavorless. The chocolate actually reminds me of the poor tasting choco-bits in some ice creams, just waxy and lacking of flavor. And it doesn't even taste the same as their regular 60% chocolate. If Ghirardelli would have used the same chocolate as their other filled delights then it would actually taste really good.
The caramel filling is the only redeeming quality of the chocolate. Smooth, full flavored, and not overly sticky (like some chocolate makers tend to use).
Overall this is a poor quality chocolate that is waxy and flavorless with the only good thing being the caramel filling. Ghirardelli really dropped the ball on this one and am a bit surprised that they allowed it out on the market.
My recommendation, buy a different flavor or brand, this is definitely not Ghirardelli at their best.
Pros: Caramel filling tastes great.
Cons: Waxy, doesn't melt well. The chocolate itself is flavorless.

Taste Great!! But Bad For You!!!!Mar 13, 2012
By Michelle Michaels Most ghirardelli chocolates are good, especially the dark chocolate. But read the nutrition facts on the side of the bag. The dark caramel has trans fat in it. For those who don't know what trans fat is, guess what? Neither does your body. The stuff is man made as a cheap replacement for certain ingredients. It was originally created as a replacement for candle wax. So think about melting candle wax down, eating it, and having it harden in your body. Your body doesn't know what trans fat is so it sends it straight to your arteries, which clogs your arteries. That is what is called Heart Disease (clogged arteries). So having 1 or 2 of these candies probably won't kill you, but they are kinda addicting. Also think about other food you eat and whether or not they had a little bit trans fat in them. Quickly a little will turn into a lot, and not even a little bit of this stuff is ok. Think about your heart and the potential health risk. Ghirardelli needs to stop using cheap ingredients and go back to the drawing board on this one. FYI: Another term for trans fat is hydrogenated oil.
