One drop and it's deadJul 10, 2010 Stylish, yes. Great capacity, yes. But there are downsides too.
(1) It is BIG and HEAVY!
(2) It runs hot so I had to figure out a way to hold it up off a hard surface (like the desk or nearby bookshelf) to provide some ambient cooling.
(2) Even worse, one drop and it's dead. In a kitty-related disaster, it fell the height from my desk to the carpeted floor (and not even a concrete floor!). When I picked it up, a variety of small broken pieces fell from the drive and others rattled around inside. Alas, the drive could no longer be written to -- at least it let me access data, so while I was doing research to replace it I didn't have to worry about having no back-up. And of course it was 2 weeks beyond the laughable "1 year limited warranty."
The replacement will NOT be an Iomega.
TRICKY, but EARNED THEIR STARSJun 25, 2010 After loading half my CD collection, my machine stopped working, though the on-light worked. Very mad. Tried to return to Amazon. No-too late. [...] No not theirs. Some special dept at [...] for warrantees--No response. iOmega returns? Couldn't get their approval, very complicated. Gave up and took a shot sending it back to the iOmega headquarters. Problem solved. I had accidently plugged in my husband's iOmega cord to my machine. They figured it out, mailed me my machine AND the right cord overnight.
So I had not bought a piece of junk. But next time I'm going to ask where do I send the product for replacement under warranty before I purchase it!
Iomega have saddled buyers with flawed softwareJun 25, 2010 Drive works fine but the Retrospect it comes bundled with does not. It worked for a while or appeared to, then I got the following message
Updating status..." 0 Restore Points available. Multiple reboots later nothing changed. So I started googling and found many others with the same problem.
I emailed iomega tech support and ended up with the following message and no further help..
"EMC recently sold Retrospect to Sonic Solutions. While Iomega will continue to provide Retrospect Express HD and Retrospect Express to our customer free of charge, all support is now handled by Sonic."
Sonic charge for their tech support. Iomega have really dropped the ball on this one. I bought my drive in Feb 2010 and now have the annoying task of finding out how to remove Retrospect and looking for an alternative system or backing up manually.
So choose something else, there are many good alternatives out there.
No issues so farMay 27, 2010 I've only had this item for 2 months, but so far it's doing its job. It's easy to install and to make use of, and for the price it's hard to find more storage. The thing wish drives this size is that if they ever fail on you, you've lost a significant part of your life's information. I'm beginning to consider backing everything up on cds as well.
Works as I expected!Apr 13, 2010 The Iomega eGo 1 TB external hard drive works great. All I had to do was power it up and plug it into the computer. All of my computers have recognized it as an external storage device and swapping files is easy as can be. It is large for an external hard drive, but small for a 1 TB storage device, just as I expected. I've had no problems so far, but have only used it for e few months. I would easily recommend this product, especially for $99!
