4Butter smutter - here are the ingredients:Aug 10, 2008
By Jane E. Applebee
MTR should consider changing the name of this item for their American market.

Paneer Butter Masala, at 16g of fat per serving - each package is considered 3 servings - certainly isn't a low-fat entree, however, it isn't as bad as it sounds and it is tasty and satisfying; especially good over rice on cold rainy days when you need something comforting and slickery with fat. It is, in other words, the Indian version of the grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.

I don't understand why the ingredients are not listed for every grocery item, I suppose it is because they vary seasonally? Maybe? In any case, here are the ingredients off the package I bought a few months ago:

Water, Tomato (16%), Cottage Cheese (16%), Onion, Cashew nut, Ghee, Butter (2%), Salt, Coriander, Red chili, Ginger, Garlic, Green chili, Turmeric, Coriander leaves, Cumin, Fenugreek leaves, and Spices

5What's Not to Love?Aug 01, 2008
By Leo "Katphish"
Pre-packaged Indian food that actually tastes like what you'd get at a decent Indian restaurant (sometimes better, depending where you live). I've tried a number of these and they've all been delicious so far. What's even better is the price! Most imported ethnic food items, particularly pre-packaged convenience foods, are much more pricey. These are actually quite cheap. As if that weren't enough, these products are 100% all natural, which to me at least, is very important. No high-fructose corn syrup of hydrogenated oils or MSG or scores of chemical preservatives you can't even pronounce let along identify. And, even considering that, they somehow have the shelf-life of plutonium. I justify buying these 10-packs by telling myself it's part of my disaster preparedness plan :) Come Armageddon, when everyone else is either starving to death, eating radioactive rodents they caught, or force-feeding themselves horrible MREs, I'll have my own ready supply of delicious Indian delicasies to enjoy before I succumb to my wounds!

Last, but certainly not least, is the ease of preparation and speed. These have become a staple in my home and we have them all the time! If you like Indian food but either can't or don't want to make it yourself or go out and get it, then give these a try and see if you fall in love with them as I did!

Ok, one more small sidenote: there are tons of varieties to try. I disagree with the reviewer that said they all taste the same. While some varieties might be similar, some dishes are similar by nature. I haven't noticed any "sameness" or monotony after having tried about 6 different ones. Maybe it's just my highly accute tastebuds? :)

5an excellent productAug 17, 2007

I love paneer dishes but they're difficult to prepare from scratch and the pre-packaged Indian foods that you buy at the grocery store are usually $4-6 dollars per package. These are more affordable, and they're really good. A little on the spicy side -- don't buy them if you like mild foods.

5Good grubMar 02, 2009

This is a somewhat spicy hot curry with a great flavor and a neat texture due to the cottage cheese chunks. I really like this but an envelope is not large enough to stand alone as a meal. A bowl of hot fresh rice stretches it and complements it greatly. Try Basmati rice. One time I had it, I added some coconut milk to see if it would be similar to Thai curry. It was OK and did not ruin the dish. The next time, I plan to add some tofu to stretch it and then maybe some shredded flank steak at another time. I know that defeats the vegetarian part, but I'm an omnivore and I like to experiment. I expect to buy more and will keep it on hand since it doesn't need refrigeration.

5Spicy and heavy on the butter/gheeFeb 25, 2009

Wish the paneer cubes were bigger, but the flavor is top notch. The one off note is the tomato, which is intensely and almost metallic; I suspect they used a highly concentrated canned tomato paste. But the spicing is great; this is probably the spiciest prepackaged tomato-curry paneer I've tasted (out of a half dozen or so), though some restaurants go more overboard.

There are other options out there that are filling and flavorful with half the fat and the same or more protein. But if you don't have to watch calories and like heat this is my pick; also, for a family this product could be split 2-3 ways with sides and make a cheap and tasty meal. Too rich to eat by itself, it needs a starch or lighter vegetable side dish (For a quick office lunch, adding 2-3 ounces of water to the gravy before heating and 2 ounces dry whole-wheat couscous after works great, though obviously roti would be more authentic).
