1Insanely sweet.Jun 13, 2010
By Kai "The cheeky librarian."
I was raised in Europe, so I'm used to Dr Oetker products and grew up on their pudding, which is delicious and comforting. When I saw this in the store in a box rather than the usual packet, I was a little confused, but very excited: I could finally get this stuff without going through the trouble of finding it in a specialty store!

I knew there'd be trouble when I opened it and saw the volume of powder. In the traditional Oetker mixes, it's basically corn starch and flavoring--you add in the sugar. Some varieties did come with sugar already mixed in, but none of them had this volume of powder (they all called for the same amount of milk--500mL or approximately 2 cups). I figured that it was the desiccated coconut and hoped for the best.

No. It was sugar. Honestly, it tastes like there's a 1/4 c. of pure sugar in this stuff. It's way sweeter than the Oetker puddings I grew up with. It's way sweeter than Jell-O pudding, too--again, visualize dumping 1/4 c. of white sugar into your Jell-O instant pudding. Yes, THAT sweet, and no, I'm not exaggerating. I do have a sweet tooth, and this is just disgusting.

I couldn't fathom this being any better as a pie filling. I also tried it in the chocolate, which was only marginally less sweet, but still far too sweet to even use as a filling, etc. It upsets me that Oetker figured the US consumer was either a) too lazy to add in their own sugar ("aw, come on, I have to ADD stuff?" ...please) or b) fond of sugar-paste with a hint of coconut flavor. I'm horribly disappointed. Please don't bother with this stuff; if you want to try the real kind, look for the Oetker pudding packets (even here on Amazon), they come in 3-packs (three packets, each which make about 2 servings, which are packed together in a single foil pack). They're on here, and they're much better. If you look in the ingredients? No sugar. You add in your own, and I recommend around 1 3/4 Tbsp (or 2 Tbsp if you really like things sweet, less if you don't) and adjust from there.

I can't believe anyone would rate this product highly.

This pudding is so tasty without any artificial stuff. There are even little pieces of coconut in it. It is really easy to make and delicious warm.
