4good sauce... not enoughMar 28, 2008
By Kevin Stanton "stanke36"
This is good sauce. The packaging is great, a pouch that stores easily upright and takes up little space in your cupboard. No bulky jars to take up space. The heating is also very convenient, just clip a corner and pop in microwave... couldn't be easier. Flavor is good, it's mild and easily doctored with a few spices.
What I didn't like about this is there isn't quite enough for one pound of cooked pasta. And that's how most pasta comes packaged, is in one pound packages. Two of these would be way too much. So, I found I needed to add a little bit more to the mix. Otherwise, really good stuff.

3Average Taste and Convenient for Certain UsersMar 19, 2008
By Frederick S. Goethel "wildcatcreekbooks"
I was a tad skeptical of how this sauce would taste. I grew up eating Italian cooking from Italians that were fantastic cooks and have never found a bottled sauce that could come close to being as good as their homemade sauces. While this does not rival the sauces they made, it does a good job in the jarred sauce category. Will it replace my runs to a wonderful local Italian eatery? No. Could I use it at home and be happy? Yes. The taste was good, but not outstanding. I would need to add quite a bit of spices to make it a great sauce.

The convenience issue is a different story. I didn't find it all that much better than pouring sauce into a pan and heating it, although the pouch shape did store more easily in our pantry. On the other hand, our daughter thought the idea was fantastic. She is a competitive swimmer who consumes large amounts of pasta to keep her energy levels up. When she goes to college next year, she will not be allowed to have a hot plate in her dorm, but will be allowed a microwave. She is planning on taking pre boiled pasta with her in plastic containers. Then all she has to do is refrigerate that and microwave to heat. Heat the sauce and she has a dinner late at night flowing practice (when the food service is shut for the night) that will be healthy and have the carbs she needs. She plans to cook pasta up in batches at a family friend's house that happens to live only an hour away from school.

I can fully understand the complaints on the convenience issue and think the packaging depends on what type of user you are. If you use a lot of sauce, this isn't for you, but if you're a senior and eat fairly lightly or a student trying to eat healthy meals, this type of package is wonderful.

5Excellent nutrient dense foodAug 20, 2008
By Josh Wakefield
I have just read over 70 reviews of this product. However, the most important difference between the Ragu jars and pouches was not mentioned. The nutrition facts of Ragu pasta in pouches absolutely dominates the pasta in jars. One serving from a pouch yields: 100% Vitamin A, 15% Vitamin C, 4% Calcium, 4% Iron, and 15% Vitamin E (% daily values based on a 2,000 calorie diet). You will need to eat six jar servings of Ragu pasta to get the same vitamins and minerals of one pouch serving.

3DecentMar 21, 2008

I've tried 3 Tomato/Basil pasta sauces: Classico, Ragu and Bertolli. I like the Bertolli the best. This one and the Classico are about even - acceptable if not inspired. It's smooth not chunky, more or less traditional type of consistency. No preservatives, no food coloring and no chemicals. It seems to me like its true calling would be as an ingredient in another recipe. I'm going to keep this one in mind the next time I make chicken parmigiana.

My rating is based on the flavor of the sauce and not the packaging. I did this because one's opinion of the microwaveable pouch will be directly related to the number of servings of sauce needed at any one time. If you can use the entire 13.5 ounces at one time, the convenience and simplicity of the pouch could be worth a fourth star to you. If, like me, you need only one serving, then you will have to squeeze a portion into a microwave-safe receptacle and work out a way to save the remainder (I put the opened pouch into a quart-size ziploc and then into the fridge.)

I've checked the supermarket shelves, and Ragu does make a tomato and basil pasta sauce available in a jar. It appears to be the same, but does not have the exact same name so it may be formulated differently. Nevertheless, that's the product I would buy if I wanted a tomato and basil pasta sauce from Ragu.

3Convenient packaging for some, but that's it.Mar 20, 2008
By aliled "aliled"
For starters, this Ragu spaghetti sauce has nothing on the far superior Bertolli sauve now packaged in nearly the exact same microwaveable package. This sauce tastes to me exactly like the stuff you get in the jar - thick and rich and well-blended. (The Bertolli sauce is superior in the sense of freshness and flavor, but some people dig the Ragu of their childhood, so your mileage may vary!)

As with similar packaging of food items (like the new range of "microwaveable rice"), the price is pretty high when one calculates it by ounce. But it's probably cheaper than using half of a jar and leaving the rest to 'age' in one's refrigerator to the point where it gets thrown out - both in cost and environmental waste! And it is nice to heat this up without having to use a pan.
