5An Effective Desensitizer ToothpasteMar 09, 2009
By kone "kone"
I am a dentist who recommends Sensodyne toothpaste for my patients with sensitive teeth. I give it 5-stars because it has a proven track-record of many years of effectiveness.

The active ingredient in any toothpaste that is advertized as a "desensitizing toothpaste" is potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate works by plugging the micro dentinal tubules that communicate directly with the pulp (nerve center) of the tooth. Most people have sensitive teeth because of gum recession exposing the root surface, (or thinning enamel) thus exposing the dentinal tubules. If the tubules are touched, exposed to sugar, or cold, fluid moves in the tubule and this is perceived as pain. With repeated exposure, potassium nitrate effectively plugs up the dentinal tubules to lessen or completely eliminate sensitivity.

This toothpaste will not work on teeth with cavities, or teeth with abscesses - it only works on teeth with exposed dentinal tubules.

It is also important to realize that Sensodyne does not work immediately. It takes up to 2-4 weeks of continuous daily exposure for the product to work.

Sensodyne can be used as a "stand-alone" toothpaste, since it has fluoride in it, or it can be used just for sensitive areas.

Finally, the effect of the potassium nitrate will wear off over time, so it is likely one will need to repeat the treatment as sensitivity returns.

This is a great product for those with sensitive teeth.

5Don't be confused by all the new flavorsJan 30, 2009
By Eric Paulsen
I had used the "old" one flavor for a decade with wonderful results and then tried one of the "new flavors". After two weeks my sensitivity was back and since I had a dental cleaning scheduled I asked my hygenist what was going on. She said that she had received a letter that stated that Sensodyne was branching out into regular toothpaste and it might not be as effective as the "old" type. She had some samples of the new package but "old" flavor and now I am certain I will get some much needed relief. If you are looking for sensitivity relief this is the one you want.

5Works Well if Given Enough Time to Work ProperlyMar 07, 2010
By Frederick S. Goethel "wildcatcreekbooks"
This toothpaste was recommended to me by my periodontist after I had to have periodontal surgery performed on my upper jaw. Following the surgery, I became extremely sensitive to cold in that quadrant of my mouth. The dentist placed a material along to teeth to calm the pain down, but also recommended that I begin using this daily. He also recommended that I stay away from my regular brand of toothpaste since it was abrasive and would cause even more damage to the exposed area where the pain was occurring.

Although it took a few months, I can now drink and eat cold items as if nothing had ever happened. The hook, so to speak, that this needs to be used at every brushing without exception. The active ingredient fills in minute spaces in the tooth, and will continue to fill these holes only if the material is used regularly.

The consistency of this particular product is that of a paste style toothpaste and it has a pleasant, but not overpowering mint flavor. The paste is a little soft, which takes some time to get used to, but overall it works well. If you don't like paste and prefer gels, there is another of their products that I will review that is a gel type toothpaste.

5I Have Been A User For Years.Apr 03, 2012
By The Man With No Name
I love this toothpaste. I have been a consistant user of it for years. Believe me it does work. This is specifically for exposed roots. When your gums get to high, due to recession, (something most Americans have...), you expose a part of your tooth that is extremely sensitive. The way my hygenist explained it to me is that the "root" has tiny holes in it, pores if your will, going back these pores you come to the nerves of the tooth. Anytime food, hot or cold substances touch these nerves, you get ZINGED!!!

Anyone who has this knows exactly what I mean. I have about 4 teeth with this, one in particular I try and pay extra attention too. Using this everyday really cuts down on sensitivity. But you will never be rid of it completely. But this helps tremendiously. Combined with a flouride rinse and flossing and my electric toothbrush, this toothpaste has kept my teeth in pretty good shape.

I can say with honestly that whenever I have had to get fillings, it was all do to stupidity on my part, not brushing enough. Hopefully I have had my last filling, but who knows what the road holds.

They used to say not to use Sensodyne longer that 14 days, my dentist said you can use it forever, so I have.

If you find yourself with sensitive teeth and you don't have any cavities, this toothpaste is well worth a try. FYI, if you are just starting, or have not used this for a while it takes apx 4 days to start feeling the effects. So brush, brush, brush and be patient, it will kick in.

Good luck, and remember you only get 2 sets of teeth, treat them well. Your third set will be expensive...
