Please be aware that this device only links at 1.5Gb/s.
The manufacturer documentation states that this enclosure does support 3Gb/s, but it does not.
Tested with 6 different types of SSD drives, enclosure only links at 1.5Gb/s.
All drives link at 3Gb/s when directly connected to PC.

This enclosure gives great USB2 throughput but even better eSATA performance. I was very impressed with how well the enclosure kept the drive inside cool. I was happy that they include the eSATA cable! USB cable is provided but if your computer does not proved 500ma current, you may have to purchase a power adapter. Most newer computers and laptops meet this requirement so NO POWER ADAPTER would be needed.

I've used several Vantec SATA enclosures in my work environment and have always been impressed with their reliability. Screwing the Hard Drive down to the board that has the SATA to USB connection is essential for reliable data transfer and integrity. I bought this to replace the flimsy plastic enclosure for my Western Digital Passport Drive, which the USB to SATA connection stopped working. While it is now bulkier then the original WD enclosure, its better protected and I'm not as concerned about data loss. I strongly recommend this to anyone looking to salvage their laptop hard drives, or build their own USB HDD's. Shop around on price, Amazon, Newegg and Monoprice (.com) are usually within 5 dollars of each other, so, whichever offers free shipping would be my choice.

Does the job for a first-timerSep 09, 2010

I'm handy, but not a computer technician. It was easy to open this up, install a hard drive, close it up again, and start using it. Picked it based on the good reviews I'd already seen. Although it came with a driver disk, I just let Windows install the drivers automatically. This is always what I prefer doing because who knows what crapware a manufacturer's disk will try to install. Works just fine.

Well designed product, works and looks great. Wanted a 2.5" HDD enclosure with eSATA support. Only negative thing would be that it did not come with a wall plug-in power adapter, had to buy a Wall Charger/Power Adapter for USB devices; in order to free up a USB port on my laptop. Arrived earlier than expected, a plus in my book.
