Definitely a class actFeb 04, 2007
By Jerry Saperstein If you need an external case for a 2.5" eSATA interface drive, I doubt that you can do better than this Vantec unit. The black and chrome finish is simply beautiful - and I don't usually care about such things.
The construction is first-class, everything fitting snugly. There are no rough edges on this unit, either in terms of the actual materials or the design. Drives line up perfectly with the mounting holes. Two long screws are provided to attach the drive platform to the case: you won't be losing screws on this unit because of vibration in transport.
The USB cable is novel. The power extension has a pass-through, so you don't lose the use of a USB port. On the two laptops I tried this with, I did not need to use the second lead for power. Your experience may vary.
One standout touch is that Vantec provides a very nice zippered carrying case for the enclosure and cables. Both the enclosure and the cables get their own pockets, which is really a very thoughtful design touch.
Buy yourself a 2.5" eSATA drive (which come in capacities of up to 200GB, though this enclosure is rated only up to 160GB) and this case and you'll come in dollars ahead of the competing Seagate unit - and have a better looking product with a nice carrying case as well. Even though a Seagate portable drive costs more, they don't even include an el cheapo sleeve or anythintg. Vantec defintitely gets the nod on this product - it's slick.

Major problems with e-SATAFeb 08, 2012

This little 2.5-inch external hard drive enclosure works fine with USB2, but I specifically bought it for the eSATA support (which lets the computer communicate with the drive at full speed, typically 100 MB/s, instead of clipping it at approximately 25 MB/s). Alas, I cannot get the eSATA support to work.
When I try to connect using eSATA, the little blue light just flickers on and off repeatedly, despite the fact that I'm attempting to connect to a UGT-ST310R eSATA adapter card (ironically, also made by Vantec).
I contacted Vantec's e-mail support. They responded quickly, but gave me bad advice. They suggested I try an external 5V power supply. I have several, but none with a plug that fits. They suggested something with a 3.5mm (OD), 1.1mm (OD) by 9.5mm connector. I bought such a connector (a CUI Inc. PP3-002C) and cobbled up one of my power supplies. It STILL doesn't fit. I later discovered I should have used a 3.5mm (OD), 1.3mm (OD) by 9.5mm connector instead. I did a second cobble with a CUI Inc. PP3-002D. This time it fit and the enclosure powered up properly, but the eSATA support STILL DIDN'T WORK!!
Vantec's enclosure doesn't work with their own eSATA controller card. Sad.
Tends to fall off the SATA bus.Feb 03, 2012
By Mandryke After a few hours of operation--generally at least two--the drive disappears from the SATA bus. It's being provided quite steady power from a tested and working 3A max power supply, and the drive only needs about 0.4A to spin up and be detected. Also tested with two other known working drives, all 5400rpm.
Good External HDD enclosureOct 14, 2010
By Kenneth Huang All in all It's a pretty good enclosure the only thing that you might want to do is screw the HDD onto the Board cuz I didnt that time and it felt kinda loose. In size it's pretty big compared to the Seagate enclosures, it comes with it's own carry case and everything fits nice and snug. If you want a simple enclosure I suggest you get this one~
Works better than expectedApr 12, 2010
By Joe Ackbar Bought this enclosure to replace a cheapo one I bought about a year ago, and I must say I am impressed. I love the e-sata connection, it is very fast. All of the cables you could want come with the device. After a quick read on the instructions (plug in the e-sata first, then usb2.0 to provide power) the drive came up quickly, and my computer immediately recognized my 160gb drive. One quick reformat and done. I have transferred things back and forth several times, and the drive has been recognized every time I plug it in. The case is VERY nice, and the mount included secures the drive well. I haven't noticed any heat issues, and I have never heard it make any bad noises. It even looks good enough to keep out in the open. I also performed a PS3 backup with this drive (had to reformat to fat32, but very easy with win 7) and it worked great with the PS3 as well. I couldn't be happier with this product, easy to use and pretty to boot.
